What's In Your Bars?

Honey, that’s what!

Honey in sports nutrition

When creating Enduro Bites, we experimented with practically every carbohydrate source we could find, looking to attain an appetizing bar without spiking glucose levels or leading to that inevitable “rot gut”. We eventually settled on honey as one of our carbohydrate sources, and you’ll see it on every bar’s ingredient list.

Why do we use it?

Honey is one of the world’s original superfoods and has been used for thousands of years in many different ways. Specifically, the honey we use in your bars is sourced locally here in Colorado, and is 100% pure, raw and unfiltered. Besides tasting amazing, unfiltered honey contains an abundance of antioxidants that have a positive impact on daily health. Research shows that honey also lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and raises HDL (good) cholesterol in comparison to other quickly-digested carbohydrate sources.

More importantly, athletes have traditionally consumed honey over other traditional energy sources because it has a less dramatic effect on blood sugar and properly managing blood sugar is the key to sustaining your energy level and not bonking. Because whatever you’re doing, it’s not nearly as fun if you’re fighting off the bonk. Our focus in the development of Enduro Bites was to make a great-tasting, easily-digestible food to provide long-term energy and make bonking a thing of the past. That is, unless you forget to pack them.

Honey is obviously widely available in most stores, but be careful to select raw, unfiltered and 100% pure honey, just like the kind we use in Enduro Bites. Ultra-processed commercial honey products, labeled as “fake honey” by some due to the fact they often don’t contain pollen, are best avoided. These products tend to have so many nutrients extracted during processing that they lack the important qualities and benefits of raw honey, making them no better than other highly-processed sugars. Unfortunately, the bulk of stores in the U.S. sell tons of this commercial honey, making it hard to find the good stuff.

Good morning. I have been enjoying your Enduro bites and Enduro Beta Red. I noticed that in your ingredient list on the packaging you use “natural flavors”. These kind of terms are very misleading and confusing for consumers that are concerned about what is being put in their bodies. Especially for a product that is designed for athletes trying to enhance their performance. Can you provide more information about what “natural flavors” means so I can make a better determination as to how this might impact my body? Thanks.
