Trans BC Enduro Day 1
By Emily Sabelhaus
Megan Rose has quite a following in the enduro community. Not only is she a ripper, she also creates, organizes, and masterminds renowned events like the BC Enduro Series and the Trans New Zealand. Megan isn’t afraid to push the envelope and loves to include all the gnar, tech, and fun in her races.
When I heard Megan was hatching a plan to create a multi-day enduro covering her favorite BC trails, I knew I couldn’t miss it.
The Trans BC just wrapped up Saturday. The 6-day event featured flowy single track, technical root-covered descents, rock slab riding and everything in between. We passed through Kelowna, Penticton, Rossland and Nelson, spending three to six hours each day pedaling. And, like all enduro events, the descents were timed and the climbs untimed.
Here’s a Day 1 recap. And, be sure to check back throughout the week for more stories from the trail.
Racers arrived and checked into their dorm-style accommodations in Kelowna, then gathered to share dinner and learn about what exactly they’d signed up.
The next morning, we grabbed some hot breakfast and then loaded up on the party buses en route to Vernon.
After a 40-minute shuttle, we hopped on our bikes and enjoyed mostly singletrack to the beginning of Stage 1. Sarah Rawley crushed those switchbacks.
Never too proud to get off your bike and push! This is only the first transition of many this week.
In true Megan fashion, the trails were full-on right from the very beginning. Craig Harvey busted a tire on the brutal 21-minute stage 2. He then attempted to re-inflate it with an air compressor and exploded it instead. Oops! Don’t worry, he was up and rolling on a spare wheel in no time.
After five stages of fast, fun, technical descents, racers were treated to a dip in the lake at the bottom of the final stage before climbing up to the buses that would transport us back to Kelowna.
The climb was gorgeous as we watched Lake Kalamalka come into view below us. Looking forward to tomorrow as we cruise into Penticton for 7 stages of glory!
